According to the legend this pious river originated from the tresses of Lord Shiva and descended to earth for the welfare of humankind.
Varanasi is among the famous tourist destinations of North India. The city is also known as Banaras and Kashi. It is a centre of learning and civilization since ages. It is also a pilgrimage centre of Jains as it is believed that Parsvanath, the twenty third Tirthankar of Jains was born here. Sarnath is a wonderful destination near Varanasi where Lord Buddha preached his first sermon after attaining enlightenment.
Varanasi Ghats are among its major attractions. Ghats of Ganga are considered the holiest spots of the city. Pilgrims from far and wide flock to these ghats to take a dip in the holy water of river Ganga. Although there are several ghats here but the Dashashwamedh Ghat is the most famous. It is well known for its evening aarti which truly uplift the spirits. You can also enjoy a boat ride on the river in the early morning to treat your senses with breathtaking views of sunrise.
Kashi Vishwanath Temple is the most famous temple of Varanasi. It houses one of the twelve Jyotirlingas. It was built in the year 1780 by Maharani Ahilya Bai Holkar.
The tour to Varanasi is incomplete without browsing its colourful bazaars. The city is world famous for its Banarasi silk saris and carpets. The silk saris are available in various colours and designs. The city is well known for its best quality silk.
